Which DOF Reality Motion Rig Is Right for You?

Picking a motion rig comes down to four honest questions: what's your budget, what do you mostly drive or fly, how much room do you have, and how many axes of motion you actually need. There's no single "best" rig - there's the right rig for your space, your sims, and your wallet. We're an authorized DOF Reality dealer and we race on this gear ourselves, so this guide is the same advice we'd give a friend: buy the platform that matches how you'll really use it, and remember every DOF rig is built to grow with you. If you're still narrowing it down after reading this, our free pre-purchase consultation is one phone call away.

Choose by series: Mover vs Hero vs Pro

The series decides how the rig moves and how hard it's built to be pushed.

  • Mover (M2, MP2e) - the seat moves, your controls stay put. Your seat tilts on its own base while the wheel, pedals or stick stay fixed to your existing rig or stand. It's the most affordable, most compact way to add real motion. The M2 is the everyman's entry point; the MP2e is a heavier, Pro-grade seat mover for commercial or all-day use where space is tight.
  • Hero (H2, H3, H4, H6) - the whole cockpit moves as one. Seat and controls ride together on a full platform, so the wheel and pedals stay locked to your hands and feet exactly as they would in a real car. Smooth motors, an enthusiast-friendly price, and the most popular line we sell. Top speed around 50 cm/s (86 deg/s) with up to 1500W peak on the H6.
  • Pro (P2e, P3e, P4e, P6e) - Hero motion, commercial-grade. Same full-platform concept, but roughly 50% faster motion (up to 75 cm/s / 105 deg/s), more torque, and a higher 440 lb / 200 kg user capacity. Built for arcades, training centers, and anyone who wants the strongest, most relentless motion DOF makes.

Choose by axes: what 2, 3, 4, and 6 DOF actually feel like

"DOF" means degrees of freedom - the number of separate ways the rig can move. Each level adds a new sensation on top of the last. For a deeper walkthrough, see Motion 101.

  • 2 DOF - Pitch + Roll. You feel acceleration and braking (the rig tilts forward/back) and the lean of cornering (tilts side to side). This is the core of "feeling the car," and for many drivers it's the biggest single leap from static to motion.
  • 3 DOF - adds Yaw. The rig rotates, so you feel rear traction loss: oversteer, drift, and coordinated turns. This is where a sim starts to feel like it's fighting back, which is exactly why 3 DOF is the sweet spot for most enthusiasts.
  • 4 DOF - adds Heave. The whole platform moves vertically, so curbs, bumps, kerb-hops and runway texture (or turbulence in flight) come through your body. Great if you want surface detail and immersion.
  • 6 DOF - adds Surge + Sway. The platform slides forward/back and left/right on top of everything else - full freedom of movement and the most realistic motion DOF offers. This is the top end of immersion for serious sim builders.

Choose by use case: Racing, Flight, Heli, Universal

What you fly or drive matters as much as your budget, because of the gearbox tuning.

  • Racing. Fast, sharp inputs - braking, cornering, traction loss. The standard Hero and Pro motors are tuned for exactly this. Browse Racing rigs.
  • Flight. Slow, deliberate, precise movement - banking turns, climbs, turbulence. Here you want the "r" variant (H2r, H3r, H4r, H6r) with the Smooth Flight Unit (SFU) gearbox, tuned for fine, low-speed motion. It carries a small premium over the racing version and it's worth it for flight. See Flight rigs.
  • Heli. The most demanding precision job of all. With an "r" platform, the full cockpit - collective, cyclic, pedals, throttle - moves with you. Browse Heli rigs.
  • Universal / mixed use. If you split time between racing and flight, the "r" smooth-gearbox variant handles both gracefully - choose it and you're covered either way. See Universal rigs.

Our picks

  • Best starter: M2 ($1,499) - the lowest-cost, smallest-footprint way into real motion. Hard to beat as a first rig.
  • Best value & most popular: H3 (from $2,999) - full-cockpit motion with yaw, the axis most people feel the most. This is the rig we recommend more than any other.
  • Best all-rounder: P3e ($5,999) - 3-axis full-platform motion with commercial-grade, ~50%-faster motors and a 440 lb capacity. The do-everything pick if your budget allows.
  • Ultimate: P6e ($9,999) - the flagship. Full 6 DOF, Pro motors, no compromises.
  • Tight on space: M2 or MP2e - seat-only motion that fits where a full platform won't.

You're not locked in - any rig grows with you

One of the best things about DOF Reality is that you can add axes later. Start with an H2 and step up to H3, H4, or H6 as your budget allows; the same path exists across the Pro line (P2e up to P6e). Upgrade kits include the extra motor(s), frame parts, and a new control/power box - so a rig you buy today is an investment you can keep building on, not a dead end. See the full ladder on our Options & Upgrades page, and remember every platform ships with the rig, motors, control unit, SimRacingStudio license, tools, and a full 1-year warranty (seat, wheel/pedals, and VR are bought separately).

Still deciding between two models? That's exactly the call we're best at. We only recommend what we'd run ourselves, and if a rig isn't right for your space or sims we'll tell you before you buy.
