Which Motion Rig Fits a Small Room?
The short answer
- The smallest way into motion is a seat mover, such as the DOF M2 or NLR Motion Platform V3. It fits a compatible cockpit you already own.
- The smallest DOF full platforms are the H2 and P2e at 2 x 5 ft. The H3 and H4 need 3 x 5 ft, and the H6 needs 4 x 5 ft.
- DOF Hero and Pro platforms stand 2 ft high and weigh 130 to 220 lb once built, per DOF.
- Rubber floor tiles protect the floor, and wheel kits let you roll the rig aside.
- Cannot spare 2 x 5 ft plus room for a screen? If you already own a compatible cockpit, a seat mover fits inside it. If you do not, a folding static cockpit is the honest answer.
Footprints side by side
These are the published footprints from our product pages and the makers' sites. Prices are from our store.
| Rig | Type | Footprint | Height | Price (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DOF M2 | Seat mover | Seat base about 8 x 16.5 x 16.5 in, inside your cockpit | Unit is 205 mm tall | from about $2,018 |
| NLR Motion Platform V3 | Seat mover | 18 x 14 x 8 in unit, fits inside an NLR cockpit | Sits under the seat | from about $3,377 |
| DOF H2 | Full platform | 2 x 5 ft (about 60 x 150 cm) | 2 ft | from about $3,235 |
| DOF H3 | Full platform | 3 x 5 ft (100 x 150 cm) | 2 ft | from about $3,985 |
| DOF H4 | Full platform | 3 x 5 ft (100 x 150 cm) | 2 ft | from about $5,202 |
| DOF H6 | Full platform | 4 x 5 ft (120 x 150 cm) | 2 ft | from about $8,603 |
Pro models share the footprint of the Hero model with the same number of axes. Our buyer's guide suggests the M2 or MP2e if you are tight on space.
Seat movers: the smallest, with a catch
A seat mover mounts under your seat, inside the cockpit or stand you already have. So plan your floor space around the cockpit. The DOF mover's upper mounts are 430 mm wide and 420 mm deep. DOF says a bracket, metal plate or plywood panel can adapt it to other frames.
The NLR V3 sits between the seat and an NLR cockpit frame. The F-GT Elite 160 Wheel Plate Edition measures 136 x 84.2 cm (53.5 x 33 in) and ships with V3 brackets. The GTElite Wheel Plate Edition measures 148 x 82.5 cm (58.3 x 32.5 in). It needs the Elite Motion Adaptor Upgrade Kit for the V3.
The catch: only your seat moves. Your hands and feet stay put, so the cues "can feel slightly disconnected," as our motion guide says. DOF also notes that without a compatible frame, a new frame plus an M2 costs almost the same as an H2. Compare the two approaches in DOF Reality vs Next Level Racing.
Not ready for motion? The NLR GTLite Pro, from about $337 (October 2026), folds and has roller wheels. It measures 170 x 87 cm (70 x 34.3 in). Our TR8 PRO V2 page describes a "small footprint to fit well in most small spaces," but lists no dimensions.
Full platforms: what the numbers mean in a room
The H2 and P2e are the narrowest DOF platforms at 2 ft wide. The H3 and H4 need 3 x 5 ft. The H6 needs 4 x 5 ft. Every Hero and Pro platform stands 2 ft high.
DOF lists a seat base height of 40 cm and a wheel plate height of 80 cm, adjustable from 65 to 85 cm. A finished platform weighs 130 to 220 lb. We have no minimum ceiling height from DOF or NLR. If your ceiling is low or sloped, send SDP Support your measurements before you order.
Each Hero and Pro platform arrives disassembled in two boxes. For a 3 axis model they weigh about 78 lb and 97 lb, so plan a hand truck or a second person. DOF lists the 6 axis boxes at 133 lb and 144 lb.
Plan for the screens too: On a DOF platform, triple monitors go on a static stand off the rig, so the image stays stable. That stand needs floor space around the platform. A single screen on the DOF Monitor Mount, from about $127 (October 2026), rides on the rig instead.
Floor, noise and power
Floor. The DOF floor mat is a set of rubber tiles, each 19.5 x 19.5 in and 0.5 in thick. It protects hardwood, tile or carpet, and DOF says it gives motion sound isolation. Six tiles for 2 to 4 axis rigs are from about $233 (October 2026). Twelve tiles for 6 axis rigs are from about $454 (October 2026). We have no floor load figure from DOF or NLR, so check with your building if you have doubts.
Noise. No maker publishes a decibel figure for these rigs. Our product pages say Hero motors keep motion "clean and quiet rather than buzzy," and call the H2 "gentler, quieter" than the P2e. DOF calls the H3 quiet. NLR says acoustic panels make the V3 "the quietest platform in its class." Treat these as maker claims, not measurements.
Power. DOF control units take 100 to 240V and plug into a standard outlet. Peak power runs from 500W on 2 axis models to 1500W on 6 axis models.
Worth knowing: DOF says you cannot put your whole existing cockpit on a platform. Only your seat moves over. Count on the DOF frame replacing your current cockpit, not sitting beside it.
Moving it out of the way
A small room often has to do two jobs. DOF transportation wheels let you roll the rig aside. They are from about $49 (October 2026) for 2 and 3 axis rigs. The 6 axis wheel kit is from about $253 (October 2026).
Lift supports for the 6 axis rig, from about $74 (October 2026), make it easier to reposition. If the control box has to sit farther from the rig, a cable extension set is from about $49 (October 2026). See every accessory in DOF Reality accessories.
